Gaining control of your dog at home

Hey, it's Chris from Maynard Dog Training Solutions. David from Dogtopia of Warwick. How's everybody doing? Hey guys. We're going to go over a little bit of stuff tonight, just a really quick tip about how to get control of your dogs when you're at home trying to train. Everybody's home right now, everyone's trying to get their dogs trained, trying to do something. You're losing control, you can't keep their focus, they're doing whatever they want to do, and then you're giving up. So we're going to show you a couple of ways that are going to be really quick and easy to get the attention of your dog. A lot of people come to my house and they see my dogs and 99% of the time my dogs have their leash on. That leash is always on them since I've had them as a puppy. The reason why I do it, it's a lot easier to control them. I don't have to always hold the leash, but that leash is always available for a quick scoop or a quick step on it, and they learn not to have that fast reaction or that fast distraction. So what we're going to do today, because Chris is here, Chris is going to work on the training, I'm going to be the distracto. We have Annie here, who's got a ton of energy this morning, so it should be really interesting to see what happens. She's ready to really mess around and make our lives really horrible here. Again, what Dave was saying about having the leash hanging off your dog, you can keep control. The biggest thing about training your dog is you're at different levels of training, every dog is at a different level. You want to start where you get the training just started, so you only have a little bit of training in the dog's life. Where the management part has to be 99%, if you're training's only 1% so far. So, the easiest way to keep management is to keep your dog on a leash. So the other thing that I'm going to do while I have Annie here, because I know she jolts and she jumps and she moves everywhere so fast, is I'm actually going to wrap it around her belly, just like you guys have seen me do when I leash walk with a dog. That way when she bolts off, I still have control with her here, so if I want to keep her attention and she's distracted. Now your dog might not be necessarily distracted by a ball or a person or whatever it is, this is just to give you an idea of what your dog might be distracted by. So any distraction, whatever it may be. Annie's just happens to be a ball, and I know she's going to go after this ball, so this is what I want to keep control of her from. So if Dave starts being a distraction for her, or that ball takes off and I'm trying to work ... Annie, Annie, come on, girl. Come on, Annie. Good girl. Now if I didn't have this leash on her, she would make contact with that ball, and what's going to happen then? She's been allowed to have that ball, so now she's been able to practice that behavior that we don't want her to practice. Instead, I want her to make sure that she is paying attention to me and coming back to me every single time. So again, I'll practice again. He'll throw the ball out. Annie, come on, Annie. Come on, girl. Come on, Annie. Good girl. Thank you, good. Uh, uh, Annie. Annie, come on, girl. Come on, girl. Annie, good girl. You'll notice that I'm not yelling at her, there's no reprimand, I'm using very little pressure to pull her. I just want to keep her contained, get her attention. I want to be the one that she wants to come to, rather than the ball that she wants to go out to. This works really good, especially when you have a dog that's ball crazy. Yes. The fun part about this is, everyone in the family can help you do this, it doesn't have to be just one person. But if you're only limited to one person, then you can do this on a leash. Annie, come on girl. Annie. Good girl, yes. Good, leave it. Good girl. Uh, uh, leave it. Annie, come on girl. Good. Leave it, good girl. She's learning not only to recall, but to leave it. So she's learning two different things at the same time. Uh, uh, uh, leave it. Good girl. Oh, if you guys could see that on the film, she turned around as soon as I called her off. Good, leave it. Come on, girl. Good, yes. Go ahead, go get that ball. Go ahead, go get it. Get that ball. Occasionally, I'm going to let her have this thing. If it's food that she's allowed to have, if it's a toy she's allowed to have, I'm going to let her occasionally get it while we're playing these games at home. Now if it's something that she's not allowed to have, if it's a shoe, a dress, some sort of thing that she's chewing up that she shouldn't, I'm going to take that from her and not allow her to have those things. So I'm never going to let her have the things that she cannot have. However, when I'm teaching, I want to use something that she can have, that way we can play that game. She anticipates that she gets to have it, and it's just going to keep training and keep doing the things that I'm asking her to do. Leave it, leave it. Good girl. Good. As she gets better with it, if she's not pulling as much anymore, I can undo the belly loop and just use the collar. Now I know she's going to take off again, so I'm not going to take the chance. We're not going to test the waters, that's too high of a level for her. I'm just going to keep it hooked onto her. Good girl. Annie, leave it. Come on, girl. Come on, girl. Come on, girl. Good girl, thank you. Go ahead, go get that ball. Go get it. Go ahead and go get it. Good girl. Again, she stopped, she allowed me to wait with her. She came back to me real quick, I let her go have that reward. The faster she does what you're asking of her, the faster she can go out and get that reward. Good girl. Come on, girl, bring that ball. Good. Good girl. Come here, girl. Good. Good girl, come here. Sit. Same thing if I'm practicing obedience commands, I can use this ball as a reward. Remember, we don't have to use food every single time. Good girl. Uh, uh, uh, leave it. All right, go get it. So she'll bring it back. I'm going to put her in a sit position as soon as she comes back. Soon as her butt hits the floor, I'm going to reward her. Annie, bring it on over here, girl. Annie, come on over here. Sit. Yes. It's as fast as that. As soon as she does it, reward her. Just like as if we were to use food, mark it with a yes, send her off, she's good. So, hopefully that helped you guys. The other part is, don't forget, they got a humongous, brand new facility here, send your dogs to daycare. Even I have to send my dog to daycare. My dog needs socialization, needs to be with other dogs, needs to be with other people. Rather than being cooped at home all day, they need to come do something. Yep, give us a call.
